Rising Costs and Global Tensions Impact Farmers
MELBOURNE — Victorian farm sentiment has taken a hit in the first quarter of 2026, as high input costs weigh heavily on the state’s agricultural sector, according to the Rabobank Rural Confidence Survey. The survey, conducted before the recent Middle East conflict, showed a significant drop in rural confidence, with net confidence falling to -3% from 24% in the previous quarter.
The survey revealed that rising costs for essential inputs like fuel and fertiliser were the primary concern for Victorian farmers, a sentiment that has only been exacerbated by ongoing geopolitical tensions. Sally Bull, Rabobank’s state manager for Victoria and Tasmania, noted that the structural changes in cost factors have made these high expenses a permanent challenge for farmers.
Regional and Commodity-Specific Impacts
The survey found that confidence levels varied across different regions and commodities. Central Victorian farmers reported the lowest confidence levels, while those in the Western District maintained the highest, despite a decline. Dairy farmers expressed significant concerns due to high input costs and dry conditions, while grain growers were worried about weak global prices.
These findings come at a time when the agricultural industry is already grappling with pressures from drought, government policies, and overseas market dynamics. The Rabobank survey, a comprehensive gauge of rural sentiment, highlights the cautious approach farmers are now taking with their investment plans, focusing on infrastructure and essential business preparations.
The survey suggested that many farmers are reevaluating their strategies to cope with the volatile market conditions. Some are looking into diversified farming practices and exploring new technologies to enhance productivity. This period of uncertainty is prompting a shift in how farmers view future growth opportunities, with more emphasis on sustainable practices and resilience against external shocks. The ongoing challenges are influencing decision-making processes, encouraging a more strategic outlook towards long-term sustainability in farming operations.
