Staff Demand Transparency and Fair Redundancy
Amid looming AI layoffs, WiseTech Global employees are raising alarms, warning the company's approach could jeopardize jobs, capability, and safety. Significant unrest has erupted among staff in Australia.
Starting from October 30, 2023, employees will begin receiving notifications about potential job losses. Despite this, the company has not agreed to offer redundancy terms beyond the minimum legal entitlements, which has further escalated tensions.
Over 590 employees, representing more than half of WiseTech's Australian technical workforce, signed a petition presented to CEO Zubin Appoo. This petition calls for fair redundancy packages, transparency, and genuine consultation, but these concerns have largely been ignored.
Professionals Australia, the union representing tech workers, noted that the situation reflects a broader turning point for the tech sector, with increasing fear among workers confronting AI-driven changes.
Impact on Workers and Company Capability
Workers have reported being informed that their roles might be replaced by AI systems. Despite this, they are expected to maintain full productivity during months of uncertainty, leading to stress and feelings of being undervalued.
The union has documented accounts of prolonged stress, sleeplessness, and anxiety among workers, with some seeking professional support to cope with the uncertainty.
Internal communications have heightened anxiety by suggesting that white-collar roles could be automated within 18 months. Employees warn that replacing experienced engineers with unproven technology could risk product quality and operational capability.
Paul Inglis, Director at Professionals Australia, stated, “This is what AI disruption looks like on the ground and workers are terrified. These are the engineers who built WiseTech’s success and they’re now facing job cuts without transparency or fairness.”
In just eight weeks, union membership at WiseTech has surged to include over 30 per cent of the technical workforce. This indicates a lack of confidence among workers in navigating these changes alone.
The petition warns that without transparency and accountability, the transformation risks undermining the company's core capabilities. The ongoing uncertainty and lack of clear communication have taken a toll on employee mental health, with widespread reports of stress and sleeplessness.
