Omdia's report highlights streaming dominance

LONDON — YouTube is on track to approach 3 billion global users by 2027, while Netflix is expected to surpass 1 billion users, according to a report released by Omdia. The findings were shared during a recent session at Series Mania in France.

The report, presented by Maria Rua Aguete, Head of Media & Entertainment at Omdia, highlights the growing dominance of these platforms in the global video consumption market. In France, Netflix and YouTube are the top choices for video services, capturing 18% and 12% of the market, respectively.

In the UK, Netflix, Sky, and YouTube lead the market, showing a balanced competition between global streaming giants and local pay TV services. Rua Aguete noted, “Scale and reach are critical, but so is complementarity. Platforms like YouTube not only amplify content but also unlock entirely new audiences.”

Streaming Trends and Market Impact

The report underscores a significant industry shift toward combining global reach with local content relevance. This trend reflects the broader changes in the media landscape, where streaming services increasingly act as both competitors and strategic partners to traditional broadcasters.

Amidst growing demand for digital content, the strategic positioning of platforms like YouTube and Netflix is critical. The report suggests that leveraging these platforms as partners can help broadcasters expand their audience reach and engagement.

The report emphasises the role of technology in shaping the future of video consumption. As more users access content through mobile devices, the importance of optimizing streaming quality and accessibility becomes paramount. This shift is expected to drive further innovations in content delivery and user experience.

The growth of YouTube and Netflix signifies a broader trend of digital transformation in the entertainment industry. Companies are increasingly focusing on personalized content and targeted advertising to enhance user satisfaction and retention. This evolution is likely to continue as platforms seek to differentiate themselves in a crowded marketplace.
