Enhancing Global Access to Cancer Therapies
On April 21st, Agenus Inc. announced the exclusive appointment of BAP Pharma as its global partner to manage access programmes for botensilimab (BOT) and balstilimab (BAL), their innovative cancer therapies. This strategic alliance enables patient access through France’s government-reimbursed Autorisation d’Accès Compassionnel (AAC) pathway and paid named-patient programmes (NPPs) across select countries. BAP Pharma will handle programme requests, case management, and logistics, ensuring compliance with local regulations.
Agenus has reported receiving over 270 physician inquiries from more than 30 countries. These inquiries highlight the significant interest in BOT+BAL access programs. The AAC programme in France allows fully government-reimbursed hospital access to patients with advanced conditions such as MSS metastatic colorectal cancer, platinum-resistant or refractory ovarian cancer, and certain advanced soft-tissue sarcomas.
Global expansion of this initiative is underway. Patients in the UK, Switzerland, Greece, Brazil, and Argentina have already been treated under paid named-patient programs. Spain is expected to join these efforts, pending local regulatory approvals. BAP Pharma’s extensive experience in global medicines access will be instrumental in the smooth operation of these initiatives.
Garo H. Armen, PhD, Chairman and CEO of Agenus, emphasised the global interest in BOT+BAL, stating, “Physicians around the world continue to express strong interest in BOT+BAL. Our exclusive partnership with BAP Pharma strengthens the infrastructure behind these programmes and reinforces our commitment to act responsibly and efficiently.”
This collaboration aligns with Agenus’ broader clinical strategy, which includes the ongoing Phase 3 BATTMAN trial focused on refractory metastatic colorectal cancer. Following regulatory approval, access to BOT+BAL remains limited to clinical trials and authorised pathways.
The partnership between Agenus and BAP Pharma signifies a commitment to providing innovative cancer treatments to patients worldwide, adhering to ethical standards and regulatory requirements. As physician interest continues to grow, the collaboration is poised to expand access to potentially life-saving therapies.
France’s AAC programme is particularly significant. It provides hospital-based, fully government-reimbursed access to BOT+BAL for eligible patients with MSS metastatic colorectal cancer without active liver metastases, platinum-resistant or platinum-refractory ovarian cancer, and certain advanced soft-tissue sarcomas under a nationally defined protocol. These patients typically have advanced cancers for which standard treatment options have been exhausted.
Outside France, BOT+BAL may be available in select countries through paid NPPs initiated by treating physicians and governed by local regulations. Physicians determine if BOT+BAL is appropriate for an individual patient based on clinical data, medical needs, and local requirements. The high volume of physician inquiries showcases the strong demand and potential impact of these therapies.
