25th Anniversary Highlights Health Impact Concerns

Marking 25 years of advocacy, Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA) warns that climate change is accelerating health impacts in Australia. As the peak medical voice on climate and health, DEA underscores the growing pressure on patients, communities, and the health system from these changes.

A gala event celebrating this milestone is set to take place in Sydney on 24th April. Leading clinicians, researchers, and public health experts will gather to reflect on progress made and outline future priorities.

DEA Executive Director Dr. Kate Wylie emphasised the urgency, stating, “Twenty-five years ago, the link between environmental damage and human health was often overlooked. Today, it is undeniable and increasingly urgent.”

Health Impacts of Climate Change

Clinics and hospitals are witnessing the effects of climate change. Bushfire smoke, extreme heat, air pollution, and biodiversity loss significantly impact patient health.

Heatwaves are a major concern, as they stand as Australia’s deadliest natural hazard. New South Wales and Queensland report the highest death rates attributable to heatwaves, emphasizing the need for immediate action.

Urgent climate action is necessary, as highlighted by DEA. “DEA’s message for climate action is more urgent now than ever before,” Dr. Wylie stated.

The anniversary event will discuss priorities for the next decade. Transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy, protecting clean air, water, and nature, reducing healthcare emissions, and building climate-resilient health systems are crucial.

Strengthening medical education on climate and health is a key focus. Healthcare professionals must be equipped with the knowledge to handle climate-related health issues effectively.

Speakers at the event include Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Professor Michael Kidd, The Australia Institute’s Co-CEO Leanne Minshull, and DEA’s Executive Director Dr. Kate Wylie. Their insights will guide discussions on charting a sustainable path forward.

The Calyx in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney will host the event at 7:00 pm on 24th April 2026. This gathering aims to catalyse action and inspire change in both the health sector and government policies.

Doctors for the Environment Australia, throughout its history, has worked with communities and health professionals to respond to health effects caused by climate change. The organisation’s efforts have included practical support, education, and advocacy for strong government action to reduce pollution.

As part of their ongoing mission, DEA continues to protect the health of families, workplaces, and communities now and into the future.
