Father's Day steak deal includes 15% off red wine
Coles has introduced a limited-time Father’s Day steak promotion, with Flybuys members able to get 15% off red wine in store at Liquorland when they spend $20 on Coles steak and scan their card.
The offer centres on the Coles Australian No Added Hormones Beef The GrillFather T-Bone, priced at $30 a kilogram. The steak weighs about 700 grams, give or take 200 grams, and is double the thickness of a regular Coles T-bone.
During Father’s Day week, steak sales at Coles rise by around 13%, according to the retailer.
Research commissioned by the supermarket found fewer than one in three surveyed customers, or 29%, felt confident cooking steak.
Steak survey shows cooking doubts
Among people who find steak hard to cook, 59% picked getting the doneness right as the biggest hurdle. Another 43% struggled with knowing the correct cooking time.
The survey also showed a split over how Australians prefer to cook steak. Pan-frying led on 53%, while more than one third, or 34%, chose a barbecue or grill.
Chef Curtis Stone said most cuts work in either a pan or on a barbecue. “For most cuts, pan-frying and barbecuing are interchangeable. If you’re not confident using the barbecue cooking in a pan is a great option as you can control the heat better,” he said.
He also recommends taking steak out of the fridge before cooking for a more even result. For the larger GrillFather T-bone, Stone recommends about 45 minutes at room temperature before it goes on the heat.
For medium-rare, Stone recommends about eight minutes on each side. He also advises turning the steak every two minutes, resting it halfway through cooking, then resting it again for at least five minutes before serving.
Stone also shared a hand test for doneness. “Hold your thumb to your index finger, then press the fleshy part of your palm under your thumb. That’s what rare feels like when pressed with tongs.
“Touch your thumb to your middle finger for medium-rare, your ring finger for medium, and your pinky for well done,” he said.
Meanwhile, the wine promotion applies to red wine only and runs in Liquorland stores. Customers must buy $20 of Coles steak and scan Flybuys to receive the 15% discount.
Karen O’Connor, Coles general manager commercial for meat, deli seafood and convenience, said Father’s Day was an important occasion for steak sales. Coles did not disclose an end date for the GrillFather T-bone beyond saying it is available for a limited time.
