Dementia Australia is set to host a series of informative sessions in Albany and Denmark, Western Australia, from 20 to 24 April 2026. These free sessions aim to provide education and resources for individuals affected by dementia, including carers, family members, and friends.

Currently, there are approximately 43,400 people living with dementia in Western Australia. According to projections, this number could rise to over 87,000 by 2054 without a medical breakthrough. Understanding dementia and preparing for its impact is crucial for communities.

Understanding Dementia

The programme begins on Monday, 20 April, from 2 pm to 4:30 pm AWST in Albany with the ‘Understanding Dementia’ session. This session offers a comprehensive introduction to dementia, covering various types, diagnosis processes, planning ahead, and support strategies for those living with the condition.

Managing Behavioral Changes

Tuesday, 21 April, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm AWST, features the ‘Understanding Changes in Behaviour’ session in Albany. Attendees will learn how dementia affects the brain, leading to behavioral changes, and explore strategies to manage these changes effectively.

Improving Communication

Later on Tuesday, from 2 pm to 4:30 pm AWST, the ‘Communication and Dementia’ session is scheduled. Participants will discover how dementia impacts communication and learn strategies to enhance interactions with individuals living with dementia.

Addressing Memory Concerns

The ‘Worried About Your Memory?’ session will be held in Denmark on Wednesday, 22 April, from 10 am to 12 pm AWST. It focuses on common memory changes with aging, memory improvement strategies, and when to seek professional help. The session is also available in Albany from 9:30 am to 11:30 am AWST on the same day.

Virtual Reality for Carers

On Wednesday, 22 April, from 1:30 pm to 4 pm AWST in Denmark, the ‘EDIE for Family Carers’ session allows participants to experience the world through the eyes of someone with dementia using virtual reality. This session repeats in Albany on Thursday, 23 April, from 1 pm to 3:30 pm AWST.

Dealing with Grief and Loss

The programme concludes with the ‘Grief, Loss, and Dementia’ session on Friday, 24 April, in Albany. This session addresses emotional challenges faced by carers and family members, offering support and coping strategies.
