Union Urges National Cabinet to Act Amid Economic Pressures
SYDNEY — Amid rising costs due to a global fuel crisis, calls are intensifying for free public transport across Australia. The Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) is urging state governments to implement this measure as a form of cost-of-living relief, coinciding with a national cabinet meeting today.
According to Alex Claassens, National Secretary of the RTBU, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has driven up fuel prices significantly, impacting Australian households. The RTBU believes free public transport, including complimentary train station parking, should be a key strategy to alleviate financial pressures during these uncertain times.
Economic Impact and Government Response
Claassens emphasised the strain on working families, stating, “The budgets of working people and families are being strained more than ever, and they’re looking to our leaders for cost of living solutions.” He further urged that public transport should be central to any governmental response, highlighting the steps already taken by Victoria and Tasmania as benchmarks.
The RTBU has expressed readiness to collaborate with state and territory governments to ensure practical benefits for communities. “Public transport is the fastest lever governments can pull,” Claassens said, noting that it helps reduce fuel demand while keeping workers connected to their jobs. The union argues that this approach could ease supply chain pressures crucial to farming, freight, and regional communities.
The push for free public transport comes as Australians face heightened expenses for petrol and groceries, driven by the international fuel price surge. The proposed measures aim to deliver direct cost-of-living relief by reducing fuel dependence and enhancing service availability to meet increased demand nationwide.
