Expansion Across Australia and New Zealand

HOYTS Cinemas and IMAX Corporation have announced plans to expand their partnership by adding 10 new IMAX with Laser locations across Australia and New Zealand by 2028. This move nearly doubles IMAX’s presence in the region, increasing the number of IMAX locations operated by HOYTS from four to 14 over the next two years.

At least three new locations are expected to open before the end of 2026, with additional locations planned for 2027 and 2028. This expansion marks the largest IMAX agreement to date for Australia, highlighting the growing demand for premium cinema experiences.

HOYTS Group CEO and President Damian Keogh expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, “Expanding our partnership with IMAX marks another step in strengthening HOYTS’ position as Australia’s leading cinema circuit while continuing to elevate the cinema experience for audiences nationwide.” The strong performance of the four existing HOYTS IMAX locations, launched at the end of 2025, reflects the growing demand for premium cinema experiences. As more movies are being specifically designed for this format, expanding their partnership with IMAX comes at the right time.

IMAX’s Growing Market in Australia

According to Giovanni Dolci, IMAX Chief Commercial Officer, “This second agreement with HOYTS within a year highlights the accelerating momentum we’re seeing across Australia and reinforces the strength of IMAX in the market.” Australia is one of IMAX’s top-performing markets globally, where demand for IMAX has outstripped their footprint. Together with HOYTS, an outstanding partner with a strong track record of delivering premium cinema experiences, they are moving quickly to meet that demand and bring the IMAX experience to more audiences.

IMAX has witnessed significant growth in Australia. Six new locations opened in 2025, contributing to a record AUD $18.6 million in box office revenue last year. Upcoming IMAX releases include titles like “Mortal Kombat II” and “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.” The new locations will feature IMAX with Laser technology, providing enhanced image and sound quality. This includes brighter images, deeper contrast, and a wider colour range, setting a new standard for immersive cinema experiences.

The IMAX with Laser technology was developed from the ground up to deliver maximum immersion. It provides crystal-clear 4K images, precision audio, and state-of-the-art projection technology. This development aims to elevate the movie-watching experience for audiences. HOYTS Cinemas, holding over 30% of national admissions, continues to lead in premium cinema experiences. The strong performance of their four existing IMAX locations, launched at the end of 2025, reflects the growing demand for such experiences as more movies are designed for the IMAX format.
