Partnership Focuses on Freight Corridors

In a significant move, India has engaged Monash University to optimise rail maintenance in its Dedicated Freight Corridors, as announced on 8th June 2026. This collaboration aims to enhance the wheel-rail interface on the Eastern and Western corridors.

Monash Institute of Railway Technology (IRT) will support the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) in improving rail maintenance, crucial for safety and sustainability. Following a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2025, the partnership is now materializing.

Professor Ravi Ravitharan, Director of Monash IRT, noted that the collaboration focuses on enhancing the wheel-rail interface to reduce maintenance costs and extend asset life. “Through this project, our team will work closely with DFCCIL engineers and technical staff,” he stated.

Strengthening Rail Network

Monash IRT will leverage its expertise in wheel-rail interface technology, which heavy haul operators worldwide have successfully implemented. This initiative aims to advance heavy haul railway engineering in India, a vital component of its expanding freight network.

International recognition of Monash IRT’s expertise came from Professor Craig Jeffrey, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) at Monash University. “This collaboration reflects the Institute’s proven capability in solving complex rail engineering problems,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of rail maintenance on new freight lines, Mr. Praveen Kumar, Managing Director of DFCCIL, acknowledged Monash IRT’s support in developing indigenous knowledge. “Improving rail maintenance has been identified as a critical factor in the newly constructed freight lines,” he commented.

Paving the way for future developments, the collaboration may lead to a Centre of Excellence in Rail Maintenance, focusing on wheel-rail interface management and system reliability. The MoU established a framework for joint research, training, and technical development.

Since 2016, Monash IRT has collaborated with DFCCIL to explore further projects as part of this broader partnership. These efforts aim to strengthen freight rail performance and innovation across both countries.
