Dementia Australia Raises Funds for Support Services

Dementia Australia concluded an online auction of the Mrs Mangel portrait from the TV series Neighbours on 4th May, with a final bid of $19,500. The proceeds will support Dementia Australia’s programmes for people living with dementia, their families, and carers.

A bidder from the United Kingdom placed the winning bid, concluding a seven-day auction that attracted 104 bids from countries including the UK, US, Singapore, Italy, Denmark, and Australia. Professor Tanya Buchanan, CEO of Dementia Australia, expressed amazement at the global interest, highlighting how fans from different countries engaged with the auction.

Global Interest in Iconic Portrait

“We knew Neighbours was popular with fans across the world, but it’s been incredible seeing the reaction to the auction and the bids coming from so many different countries,” said Professor Buchanan. The portrait has been a fan favorite since it appeared on the show in 1987, and the auction’s success underscores the enduring legacy of Vivean Gray, who portrayed Mrs Mangel.

The portrait was generously donated by Neighbours actor Annie Jones in memory of her mother, who lived with dementia. Dementia Australia ambassador Takaya Honda also supported the fundraising campaign. The funds raised will help Dementia Australia address dementia, the leading cause of death in Australia. Those still interested in contributing can donate via dementia.org.au.

Dementia Australia is a major source of information, education, and services for over 433,300 Australians living with dementia. More than 1.7 million people are involved in their care. The organisation advocates for positive change and supports vital research to help those impacted live as well as possible. For support, individuals can contact the National Dementia Helpline at 1800 100 500, funded by the Australian Government. An interpreter service is available.
