Discover Prehistoric Marvels Across the State

Queensland Dinosaur Week is set to captivate fossil enthusiasts and families alike from 4th to 10th May 2026, with events planned across the state to highlight its rich paleontological heritage.

Queensland is one of the most dinosaur-rich areas on the planet. National Dinosaur Day on 7th May will be a highlight of the week-long festivities, aiming to position itself as a world-leading paleo-tourism attraction.

Karen Hanna Miller, Executive Officer of Dinosaur Experiences Australia, explained, "Queensland’s fossil story is not complete. Every season, new finds reshape our understanding of ancient ecosystems and evolutionary changes."

Exciting Activities and Discoveries

The week will include hands-on fossil digs, such as the 'Digging at Dawn' experiences at Kronosaurus Korner in Richmond. Visitors can also enjoy a 'Night at the Museum' with after-dark dinosaur tours at Queensland Museum Kurilpa.

International palaeontologist Dr Dean Lomax will make his first Australian tour, participating in events from Winton to Brisbane and Richmond. This offers the public a chance to dig for marine fossils alongside him.

The event will also see the launch of the GREAT Queensland Dinosaur Trail Pocket Guide, designed to connect visitors with the state's top prehistoric sites through curated itineraries and travel tips.

Dr Scott Hocknull of CQUniversity emphasised the importance of the trail, stating, "Queensland preserves one of the most extraordinary and diverse fossil records in Australia."

Queensland is home to significant dinosaur and megafauna discoveries, holding the majority of Australia’s dinosaur fossil finds. Visitors can stand beside Australia’s largest dinosaur, walk through the world’s only recorded dinosaur stampede, and explore World Heritage-listed fossil fields.

In Winton, visitors can walk beside the world’s only known dinosaur stampede trackway. Richmond hosts the Kronosaurus queenslandicus, one of the largest marine reptiles. Eromanga features Australia's largest known dinosaur, 'Cooper'.

Queensland Dinosaur Week is more than just an event; it is a journey into the past where new discoveries continue to unfold. This makes it an extraordinary addition to the state’s tourism and education sectors.
