Harbison and Chapman were also chosen as vice presidents

Richard Emery has been elected president of the Truck Industry Council at the organisation’s annual general meeting in Canberra.

Emery is president and chief executive of Hino Motor Sales Australia. He succeeds Andrew Harbison, the managing director and chief executive of Isuzu Trucks Australia Limited.

Harbison and Tom Chapman of Volvo Group Australia were elected vice presidents at the same meeting.

The Truck Industry Council is the peak body for truck original equipment manufacturers, importers and distributors in Australia.

“I’m pleased to step in to the role and continuing to build on the approach taken by Andrew over the last years,” Emery said.

He also pointed to the pace of change in freight. “The truck industry is dynamic and continuing to evolve to meet the various challenges of today’s freight task,” he said.

National Truck Plan remains central

Meanwhile, the council continues to work with government, regulators and other industry stakeholders on sector issues.

Late last year, the council updated its National Truck Plan policy. It says the plan is meant to help deliver a safer, cleaner, greener, more efficient and modern truck fleet in Australia.

The council is still advocating for that plan with interested parties and key stakeholders.

Alongside the truck plan, Emery identified road charging as another priority. He said the council would give the government input on what he called the pressing need for a balanced Road User Charge in the future.

Emery brings four decades of experience in the automotive sector across Australia and South East Asia. His background includes senior roles across a range of brands and markets.

He has also served as a director of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and as chair of the Importers Group.
