Koolyanobbing District Operations to Recommence

Global mining services provider Thiess has signed a two-year agreement with Yilgarn Iron to support the revival of iron ore production in the Koolyanobbing district, located 400km east of Perth, Western Australia. This district has historical significance with its iron ore production roots stretching back to the 1950s. The project marks a new chapter for the region, with Yilgarn Iron aiming for an export capacity of more than 4 million tonnes annually.

The agreement, executed following a Letter of Intent signed in September 2025, is set to run until March 2028. There is potential for further expansion as Yilgarn Iron grows its production capabilities. Michael Wright, Thiess Group Executive Chair and CEO, celebrated the partnership, stating, “We are delighted to partner with Yilgarn Iron and contribute to a new phase for the Koolyanobbing iron ore mine, a cornerstone of Australia’s mining history.” David Greig, Thiess Group Executive Australia West, highlighted the project’s impact, noting, “This project will make a meaningful contribution to the social and economic fabric of the community, creating jobs and supporting sustainable development across regional Western Australia.”

Impact on Local Economy

Operations in the Yilgarn Hub are expected to significantly bolster local employment in the Yilgarn and Esperance regions. The recommencement of mining activities will strengthen the regional economy and enhance long-term supply chain stability. With its extensive experience and trusted expertise, Thiess is committed to helping Yilgarn Iron achieve its operational targets. The company plans to establish safe and reliable production processes that will foster long-term operational success.

Established in 1934, Thiess operates across diverse commodities, geologies, environments, and cultures. As a global services provider, Thiess is uniquely positioned to make a significant contribution to responsible mining practices. The partnership with Yilgarn Iron not only aims to revitalize the Koolyanobbing district but also to empower the region’s communities and industries for years to come. Thiess partners with its clients to deliver sustainable solutions in open cut and underground mining in Australia, Asia, and the Americas. As a result, the recommencement of operations represents a significant opportunity for sustainable growth in the region.
