Participants to Tackle Imbil State Forest Courses
The Sunshine Coast Kokoda Challenge is set to kick off on May 9th, drawing over 1,200 participants to the serene Imbil State Forest. This event marks the launch of the 2026 Kokoda Challenge series, taking place on Mother's Day weekend, making it a perfect family outing.
Participants have the option to choose from 18, 30, or 48km courses. These courses provide an opportunity to honour the Australian Diggers who served in the 1942 Kokoda Campaign. the event raises essential funds for the Kokoda Youth Foundation, which has been offering life-changing adventure-based programmes since 2004.
In its 21st year, the Kokoda Challenge has grown significantly, with scheduled events in Brisbane on June 13, the Gold Coast on July 18-19, and its second year in Sydney on September 19-20. Each event begins with a commemorative service where the Last Post is played, paying tribute to both past and present service personnel.
Participants receive a free Kokoda Challenge t-shirt and a commemorative dog tag for completing the event, symbolizing the values of Courage, Endurance, Mateship, and Sacrifice. As the toughest team endurance event in Australia, the Challenge now attracts over 8,800 participants annually, who tackle hikes of various lengths, including 18km, 30km, 48km, or the full 96km.
Teams of 2-5 members must navigate challenging hills, creek crossings, and bush trails together. This experience fosters resilience, self-confidence, teamwork, and offers the satisfaction of contributing to a meaningful cause.
In 2025, 880 teams participated from schools across Queensland. Many educational institutions, such as Notre Dame College on the Sunshine Coast, have integrated the Challenge into their curriculums as part of their physical and personal development programs. The college is returning this year with all Year 7 and 8 students.
Principal Dan McShea remarked, "When students and teachers step outside the classroom and into a shared challenge, something shifts. Conversations deepen, encouragement flows, and real connections are built."
