Perth to Byron Bay Journey for Youth Mental Health
Mark Gresser, a zoologist from Perth, is nearing the completion of his 6000-kilometre solo trek across Australia, aiming to raise awareness and funds for youth mental health. He is expected to arrive in Byron Bay on 30th May.
Gresser embarked on this journey ten months ago, pulling a cart through diverse terrains and challenging weather conditions to support the charity batyr, which focuses on youth mental health education. His goal is to raise $100,000 for the organisation.
Brooke Hyland, Gresser’s former high school art teacher from La Salle College in Perth, will be among those welcoming him in Byron Bay. She recalls Gresser as a talented and driven student, highlighting his unique approach to projects, such as creating a butter sculpture of his arm and pet budgie.
Hyland has been following Gresser’s journey closely. She instinctively reached out to offer support when she learned of his trek from Australia’s most western point to its most eastern point. Hyland is now preparing to welcome him at Reflections Brunswick Heads.
Gresser’s Motivation and Impact
Gresser’s dedication to mental health advocacy stems from his personal experiences with mental ill health. ‘Over the last five years, I have learned a lot about stress and anxiety management by seeing a psychologist,’ Gresser said. He hopes his journey will inspire young people to seek help and open discussions about mental health.
Patrick Darcy, chief executive of batyr, praised Gresser’s efforts, stating, ‘Walking across Australia for ten months is a huge physical undertaking, but what’s even more powerful is the message he’s carrying with him – that young people deserve to feel supported.’
Gresser’s arrival in Byron Bay is scheduled for after 11am, where he will be staying at Reflections Brunswick Heads, supported by Hyland and the local community. His journey can be followed on Instagram at @trek4youthmentalhealth.
Gresser has a history of tackling significant challenges. Previously, he cycled nearly 30,000 kilometers across 28 countries, demonstrating his enduring commitment to raising awareness for social causes.
