Examining Barriers and Solutions
On 1 April 2026, a comprehensive inquiry was announced by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Disability. It will address access and affordability issues of medical specialists across Australia. The initiative aims to tackle pressing challenges impacting patients nationwide.
Chair of the Committee, Dr Mike Freelander MP, expressed the inquiry’s significance. He stated, “Access to medical specialists is critical to early diagnosis, effective treatment and better health outcomes. However, many Australians are experiencing long waiting times, high out-of-pocket costs and difficulties navigating referral pathways, particularly outside major cities.”
Efforts will be made to conduct a thorough assessment of the availability, cost, and equity of access to specialist services. This includes examining workforce distribution and barriers hindering recruitment and retention in metropolitan, regional, and rural areas.
Challenges faced by Australians in accessing timely and affordable specialist care are growing. Dr Freelander pointed out that the inquiry would evaluate the current functioning of the healthcare system, identifying existing barriers and exploring potential reforms or new care models to enhance patient access and affordability.
Impacts on Patients and the Health System
Delays due to cost, distance, and waiting times will be scrutinized for their impact on patient outcomes and the broader health system. There will be a focus on primary care, emergency departments, public hospitals, and chronic disease management. Consequences of deferred or missed care will also be analysed.
Effectiveness, transparency, and equity of referral pathways will be a key focus. Perspectives from patients, primary health care practitioners, and medical specialists across both public and private health sectors will be included.
Call for Submissions
Submissions from interested parties such as patients, carers, health professionals, professional bodies, governments, academics, and community organisations are welcomed. The deadline for submissions is 16 October 2026. Innovative and emerging models of care that could improve access to medical specialists will also be considered.
