New technology aims to enhance therapy production efficiency

SYDNEY — PHC Corporation’s Biomedical Division, known as PHCbi, has announced the launch of its new LiCellGrow cell expansion system. The system, aimed at improving the efficiency and quality of cell and gene therapies, is now available for research use in Japan and selected international markets, according to a company statement released this week.

The LiCellGrow system is designed to help therapy developers by enabling real-time visualization of metabolic changes in cells and automating the control of culture conditions. This technology supports the production of advanced therapies for challenging diseases like genetic disorders and cancer, according to PHCbi.

Chikara Takauo, Director of PHC Corporation and Head of the Biomedical Division, stated, “We are excited to launch LiCellGrow™ and offer therapy developers a new way to solve common challenges in quality, cost, and delivery of cell and gene therapies.” Takauo highlighted the system’s potential to make cell and gene therapy manufacturing more efficient and scalable.

Advancements in Cell and Gene Therapy

PHCbi’s new system addresses challenges in the cell and gene therapy sector, where maintaining consistent product quality and efficiency is crucial. The LiCellGrow features proprietary in-line monitoring technology, which continuously measures key metabolic indicators such as glucose and lactate concentrations, and adjusts cell culture conditions .

The announcement comes as part of PHC Group’s Value Creation Plan 2027, which focuses on enhancing the efficiency of CGT product manufacturing. The company plans to expand its product lineup through 2028, making strides in supporting the seamless transition from research to commercial manufacturing of therapies, including CAR-T cell therapy.

Cell and gene therapies are emerging as promising solutions for hard-to-treat conditions, driving the demand for innovative manufacturing solutions. PHCbi’s LiCellGrow aims to meet this demand by providing a system that reduces production losses and costs, supporting the development of high-quality therapies.
