Rising Hand Dermatitis Among Healthcare Workers

Hygiene Protocols and Dermatitis

Recent studies show a significant increase in hand dermatitis among healthcare workers, with rates climbing from 21% before the pandemic to over 37% in 2024. This rise correlates with stringent hygiene protocols, including frequent handwashing, use of disinfectants, and prolonged glove wear.

Occupational dermatitis is characterised by redness, itching, dryness, and irritation. Extensive exposure to water and disinfectants, known as ‘wet work’, is a primary cause, making it a common issue for healthcare professionals. Recent findings in Current Allergy and Asthma Reports (2023) support this, illustrating the condition’s prevalence.

“As workers across healthcare and other industries rely on gloves and hand hygiene throughout long shifts, equipment that supports both protection and skin health becomes increasingly important,” says Leonard Brown, the Country Director of MUN Australia.

MUN Australia incorporates colloidal oatmeal into their GloveOn COATS glove range to combat this issue. This ingredient contains avenanthramides, beta glucan, and antioxidants, which help reduce irritation and improve skin hydration during extended glove use. The COATS range received endorsement from the Eczema Association of Australia in September 2024, following independent testing with individuals having sensitive or eczema-prone skin. This endorsement underscores the effectiveness of the gloves in supporting skin health.

In addition to gloves, MUN Australia offers PrimeOn COATS plant-based hand and body wash formulations. These products aim to maintain skin hydration during frequent washing, providing a comprehensive approach to skincare in the workplace.

Industries such as aged care, laboratories, food processing, manufacturing, beauty services, and industrial settings also report cases of occupational dermatitis. Improved product design, along with education on skin protection strategies, can significantly reduce the burden of dermatitis for those who rely on gloves daily, experts suggest. Safety and Health at Work (2024) highlights the increasing need for effective protective solutions. MUN Australia remains committed to innovative healthcare and personal protective solutions across Australia.
