Minister's Tenure Transformed TAFE Landscape
The Victorian TAFE Association has paid tribute to Minister for Skills and TAFE, Gayle Tierney, following her decision to step down from her ministerial role. During her decade-long tenure, she oversaw a transformative era for the Victorian TAFE Network, significantly advancing the TAFE system across the state.
Throughout her leadership, Minister Tierney introduced 45 new and upgraded TAFE campuses, modernising the state’s vocational education landscape. The landmark introduction of Free TAFE since 2019 has supported almost 230,000 students, becoming a pivotal reform that has extended nationally.
Alex White, CEO of the Victorian TAFE Association, remarked, “Minister Tierney has been a tireless champion for the TAFE sector, moving public vocational education to the centre of Victoria’s economic and social policy.” Her efforts have made significant impacts on the sector.
Modern Facilities and Strategic Importance
Under Tierney’s guidance, the TAFE system has undergone substantial improvements, positioning it as a key component in Victoria’s workforce training. Her initiatives to remove barriers to quality training have resulted in thousands of Victorians securing stable employment. This has cemented TAFE’s role in the state’s economy.

Minister Tierney’s efforts have not only modernised facilities but also enhanced the strategic importance of TAFE in the region. Following her reforms, Victoria’s vocational education system set standards for similar reforms across Australia. This was particularly evident when Free TAFE became a permanent fixture for workforce training.
