Yarra Valley Grand Hotel renovation adds beer garden and upgrades
The Yarra Valley Grand Hotel has begun a major renovation, with works now underway to upgrade the 138-year-old venue in Yarra Glen. The project includes a full refresh of dining, bar and outdoor areas, alongside improvements to family facilities.
The redevelopment will deliver an extended beer garden and deck, as well as an upgraded children’s playground. In addition, the bistro and bar spaces will undergo a complete redesign to modernise the venue while retaining its original character.

The hotel, first built in 1888 as the Burgoyne Hotel, remains a heritage-listed property recognised by the National Trust. It was renamed in 1905 and has operated as a central gathering point for locals and visitors in the Yarra Valley region.
“This is about honouring our past while securing our future and serving our local community,” said Joel Cargill, Yarra Valley Grand Venue Manager. “For nearly 140 years, this pub has been the heart of our community. We’re modernising the experience while respecting our heritage.”
Works commenced this week, but the venue will remain trading through the construction period. Further updates regarding reopening timelines are expected in the coming months.

Heritage structure retained as upgrades progress
The renovation focuses on preserving key architectural elements of the original building. At the same time, the updated design aims to improve functionality across hospitality spaces. As a result, both indoor and outdoor areas will support increased visitor capacity.
The extended beer garden will provide additional seating and outdoor dining options. Meanwhile, the redesigned deck will create a more accessible connection between indoor and external areas. The children’s playground upgrade will also expand the venue’s appeal for families visiting the region.
The Yarra Valley Grand Hotel sits within one of Victoria’s primary wine-growing areas. Consequently, the venue has long attracted both local patrons and tourists exploring the region. The redevelopment reflects continued demand for upgraded hospitality spaces in the area.
After decades of operation, the refurbishment marks a new phase for the site. The venue has served multiple generations and continues to play a role in the Yarra Glen community.
