Demand Driven by Fuel Crisis
In an impressive shift in the automotive industry, Tesla and Polestar have announced a 40% rise in electric vehicle (EV) sales in Australia for Q1 2026 compared to the same period last year. This increase is largely driven by heightened interest in EVs as fuel prices continue to soar.
The Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) revealed that these two leading brands sold a total of 7,725 vehicles in the first quarter of 2026, up from 5,549 in 2025. In March 2026 alone, the brands combined to sell 3,645 new vehicles, with sales up 21.1% year-on-year and 6.6% from February 2026.
Julie Delvecchio, CEO of the EVC, highlighted the impact of rising fuel costs on consumer choices, saying, “Every EV on the road is doing something simple but powerful – taking pressure off fuel supply for the people who need it most.”
Second-hand EV sales are also climbing, with March seeing a 60% increase from February. According to data from Pickles, 82% of used EVs are selling for under $50,000, with 43% priced below $30,000.
Impact on the Australian Market
Demand for EV finance has surged, with Commonwealth Bank reporting a 161% increase since March began. This indicates a significant shift in consumer preferences towards electric vehicles.
Julie Delvecchio stressed the need for policies that make EVs more affordable, referencing the Electric Car Discount, which offers up to $3,000 in annual savings.
Thom Drew, Tesla Country Director for Australia and New Zealand, confirmed that more stock is on the way due to strong customer demand clearing out local inventory. “We’re ramping up Q2 supply, with more vehicles arriving over the coming weeks,” he stated.
Scott Maynard, Managing Director of Polestar Australia, noted the rapid evolution of the market. He remarked, “There is a clear sense of urgency from customers, which is driving strong order volumes.”
The volatile global oil markets are reshaping conversations about EVs. Australians are increasingly eager to find out which models are available and when they can acquire them.
