Sydney-Melbourne Vocus fibre works start in August 2026
A proposed Vocus fibre route between Sydney and Melbourne will move into early works in August 2026, with UGL selected as development partner for the first phase.
UGL, part of CIMIC Group, is set to deliver survey, design, engineering, field validation, stakeholder engagement, project management and cost modelling to prepare the project for construction.
The work forms part of the Australian Digital Infrastructure Platform, Vocus’ long-term plan to develop new subsea, intercapital and metro fibre infrastructure across Australia and the APAC region.
Early works on first route
CIMIC Group chief executive officer Jason Spears said the project would strengthen connectivity between major population centres and support growth in hyperscale data centres, artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
Vocus chief technology officer Nikos Katinakis said the Australian Digital Infrastructure Platform was intended to support AI growth and give AI, cloud and data centre partners infrastructure to deploy technology at scale across Australia and the region.
A construction date for the Sydney-Melbourne route was not specified. The early works program is expected to start in August 2026.
